Leverage by itself tells you nothing about safety — a 10x trade with a 0.3% stop-loss is safer than a 3x trade with no stop. What matters is how far price has to move against you before the exchange force-closes your position. Anything under 5% distance is gambling. Most pro perp traders keep ≥20% buffer plus a manual stop well inside that.
Maintenance margin rates vary by exchange and tier (Binance and Bybit publish them per pair). 0.5% is a sane default for BTC/ETH at small size; alts can be 1–2.5% — adjust above if your size is large.
